Google’s Pixel Tablet, priced at around $500, marks the company’s belated return to tablet manufacturing, and features an 11-inch display, ceramic-coated (allegedly scratch-prone) aluminum back, and Google’s in-house Tensor chip. The design bears more than a passing resemblance to the iPad, with its simplicity and elegance. It has an IPS display which some have bemoaned lacks brilliance and is affected by glare and backlight bleed. Audio capabilities are reasonable, with four built-in speakers and the dock’s built-in speaker taking over when attached.
The tablet runs on Android 13, offering minimal customisation and a promise of five years of security updates. Enhanced voice recognition and Chromecast support are present. Performance-wise, the Tensor G2 chipset ensures smooth daily use, but you probably aren’t going to have a smooth experience playing more demanding games on it. RAM purges are said to frequently affect multitasking by killing your background tasks. The camera setup, with identical specifications on both sides, falls short of what you might expect from a Pixel. Priced at $500, the Pixel Tablet is competitive as compared to Apple and Samsung equivalents. It provides a vanilla Android experience but will have to contend with established options in its price range.
